Born and bred in Queensland, Munce burst onto the Brisbane racing scene in season 1989/90 when he won the senior riders' and apprentices' metropolitan premierships with 56 winners.
Moving to Sydney in the mid-90s, he rose to national prominence winning the 1998 Group 1-Melbourne Cup aboard the heavily-backed Jezabeel ($15 into $7).  That success followed his victory seven months earlier in the Gr 1-Golden Slipper in Sydney and spring-boarded his path to becoming one of only seven jockeys to claim each of the “big 4” of Australia’s feature races (including the Caulfield Cup and Cox Plate).  Munce has ridden over 25 Group One winners in his career.
In 2013 Munce had to overcome a battle of a different kind when he was diagnosed with throat cancer from which he has since recovered.
