One of New Zealand’s most successful apprentices, McDonald is carving a successful career in Sydney which also extends to being in demand abroad. Riding his first Group One winner in 2008, McDonald shot to prominence as he broke a New Zealand record when he rode 200 winners in 896 rides in season 2010/11. With an outstanding ability to seamlessly change the whip between hands in the heat of the moment, McDonald had already notched 17 Group One winners in the first six years of his career in New Zealand, Australia and in Hong Kong (2012 BMW Champions Mile). Choosing to broaden his racing horizons, McDonald took up the opportunity in 2013 to ride in the UK where he realised a dream of riding at the prestigious Royal Ascot meeting.
