David Payne was twice champion apprentice and twice champion jockey in South Africa before weight forced him into the role of trainer.  His first runner, Early Bird, won on debut in 1972.  He trained superstar In Full Flight to six Group One wins and has won every Group One race in South Africa at least once, among his 100 individual Group One wins.  Payne moved to Australia in 2002 with wife Merle and children Gary and Tracy.   His first Australian Group One winner was Unearthly in the 2003 Flight Stakes and he dreams of winning a Golden Slipper and a Melbourne Cup.
